Research Topics
I investigate the hominin craniodental features, to extract evolutionary, taxonomy and developmental information, using virtual paleoanthropological tools such as 3D laser scanning and micro-CT imaging.
Using 3D laser scanning and modeling techniques, we revealed the geographical distribution of craniofacial surface areas in modern human populations and we first found that absolute/relative
craniofacial surface area varies consistently with predictions derived from Bergmann’s Rule, and could be used for functional-morphological analysis.
With the help of micro-CT scanning techniques, and based on international collaboration with Wits University and Necsa, we studied the 3D inner structure of fossil hominin dentition from Kromdraai, Sterkfontein and Swartkrans, we investigated the 3D morphometrics of dentition, and extracted taxonomical/adaptive sensitive features. I also give special attention to studies on hominin developmental patterns and phylogenetic relationships.

Current research
The comparative study of dental inner structure of South African fossil hominins, modern humans and Neanderthals, focusing on the origin and evolution of our genus (Homo)
Contribute to the study “A Reassessment of Asian Homo erectus Variability”, led by Dr. C. Zanolli, analyze the morphometrics of Zhoukoudian H. erectus premolars
