Madagascar and Indian Ocean Programm

By leading several international programs MAGE, GENOMIX and OCEO-ADAPTO, our team works closely with several other research centers in the Indian Ocean. The aim of these programs is to better understand proto-globalization process in the Indian Ocean, which has connected Asia and Africa in during the four last millennium. One of our main focus being to better understand the settlement of Madagascar, and the selective pressures specific of this Island.

To this aim, we work with:

- Institut de Civilisations/Musée d’Art et d’Archéologie, Isoraka, Antananarivo 101, Madagascar

- Dept. of Evolutionary Genetics, Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology Deutscher Platz 6, D04103 Leipzig, Germany

- Department of Medical Biology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Indonesia, Jakarta, Indonesia

- Statistics and Bioinformatics Group, Institute of Fundamental Sciences, Massey University, Palmerston North, New Zealand

To unravel the history of the settlement of Madagascar, we have sampled, with them, the genetic, linguistic and musical diversity across more than 250 villages and 2700 Malagasy individuals
